Threat of Bioterrorism

As always, concern for the safety of our customers is a top priority, and while we do not anticipate that onions from Peri & Sons Farms are in jeopardy of being sabotaged, we have proactively put measures in place to deter such an event from ever happening.

What is Food–Related Bioterrorism?

All agricultural facilities are required to comply with the Bioterrorism Act of 2002 which was enacted to prevent potential adulteration of our food supply. Peri & Sons Farms has been in compliance with the Act since its enactment in 2002. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Food Terrorism as “an act or threat of deliberate contamination of food for human consumption with chemical, biological or radio–nuclear agents for the purpose of causing injury or death to civilian populations and/or disturbing social, economic or political stability.”

For Your Protection Peri & Sons Farms has adopted the following preventative measures to help protect America's food supply:

  • Our facility is registered with the FDA to ensure an efficient response.
  • We have a detailed Crisis Management Plan including a “Hold and Release” program. Our employees are trained and mock scenarios take place several times per year.
  • Random food-security inspections are in place and documented.
  • All visitors are required to check–in at our main office and are provided with an ID badge and information about food security and food safety rules.
  • Every employee at Peri & Sons Farms goes through an in–depth background check before being hired. All employees must carry proof of employment and all company vehicles are identified.
  • Wells and water sources are secured at all times.
  • Every incoming delivery truck is first inspected for suspicious or inappropriate items. All outgoing trucks are first sanitized and then loaded under supervision. This is a documented process.
  • Packaging material is received from sealed vehicles and containers. All material are checked and the process is documented.
  • Cross–checking to specific orders prior to truck departure is documented; the truck’s doors are then “sealed” by a Peri & Sons Farm employee before leaving our shipping docks. Documentation is attached to the order for traceability purposes.
  • Delivery drivers have absolutely no contact with our produce at any time and are designated to specific waiting areas.
  • Surveillance cameras constantly monitor and record our storage, packing and shipping facilities.
  • Storage, packing and shipping areas are meticulously maintained and sanitized daily and the process is documented.
